Though accounts differ as to the creation of the style, the so-called Hawaiian or aloha shirt probably emerged on the Big Island some time before WWII. After the war, U.S. servicemen wore the colorful shirts, inspired by Japanese print art, back to the mainland, popularizing the style. The contemporary trend of observing “casual Friday” at some workplaces is said to have originated in a marketing campaign by the Hawaiian Fashion Guild business group intended to promote the style. This isn’t exactly a Hawaiian shirt, but it reminds me of one. I would dig wearing it to work on Friday, or any day. Guess I better find a job!
